When we were doing some planning for Heartbeat last month one of the five key areas we decided to focus on was FUN. Organising fun events, that is.It all started with a list of alternatives to the proposed v8 motor-race. The list was faxed by Diana’s daughter from London. Amidst the suggestions were pram racing, egg and spoon races along Lambton Quay, and other events anyone could join in.
I chipped in the idea of public knitting. Seemingly a small sect was knitting on Tokyo subways and inviting passersby to knit a row or two.
It’s an idea that is catching on.
Today I was invited to join a knitting circle. There were some spare needles and wool at a public knit-in organised by Stitch’n’Bitch Melbourne. Sitting in the cacophonous atrium at Federation Square a group of knitters were yarning and knitting.
I learnt that SnB Melbourne aims to “recreate/ reconnect to traditions of the ‘sisterhood’ (& ‘brotherhood’) by offering a supportive place to stitch, create, and share fibre passions”. Members meet monthly at cafes or bars to enthuse about threads, share skills and philosophise. The Melbourne knit-rising was inspired by a similar group in Chicago.
The knit-in was part of the Melbourne Scarf Festival presented by Craft Victoria. Pictured is a detail from scarves created by C Kealy and Kirsten Fredericks.
